Medicine Beach Nature Sanctuary

At the end of the gravel lane off Aldridge Rd. Short trail to picnic and resting platform, bench. Best time of year: Anytime, but best at low tide. 

You can explore this pebbly beach for some distance in each direction, but watch your step on the shale rock at both ends as it can be very slippery. Evidence that Medicine Beach was a First Nations settlement has been found in the shell midden above the beach. The plants growing in the marsh that borders the midden were used by these settlers for food and medicine (the marsh is off limits to humans and dogs). Shellfish also provided food and tools. A 76-step staircase climbs to a sunny picnic and viewing platform overlooking Bedwell Harbour and Medicine Beach.

Higgs Beach 

Access from the end of Higgs Road or Brooks Pt Reserve. Road parking. Best time of year: Tides below 1 m. Note. Be careful climbing over the often slippery conglomerate boulders dividing the beach.

The beach is often very quiet, and if you time the tide right, you can walk right through from Higgs Rd to Brooks Pt. Be sure to check the tallest trees in Drummond Bay for Bald eagles. Look for the tide pools on this side of Brooks Pt. In the third yard from the Higgs Rd access, look for various pieces of driftwood furniture. Closer to Brooks Pt you will pass an old boat shed four feet above the beach perched on the edge of a stone wall. The shed doors are always open and inside a chess board sits atop a table, the pieces all in their proper place awaiting the next game.
